South Island Disc Golf Society November 2022 Newsletter

We hope everyone had a great summer and fall playing disc golf. Since the nice weather has come to an end and the rains have come, it seems like the perfect time for the Winter Flex League to start …

But in all seriousness, SIDGS is so lucky to have so many incredible people within its community. The recreational and competitive endeavors and the successes of the community on the local, national and international stages is simply astonishing.

As for the Board,  we continue to work with Saanich and Landford to further disc golf initiatives and are working on inroads with the CRD Regional Parks. It can be a slow process, but we continue to move forward optimistically.

We hope you can join us at the 2022 Annual General Meeting, which is scheduled for Monday, December 12 at 8pm via Zoom (link below)!

As of November 22, 2022 SIDGS currently has 154 paid members registered for the 2023 season. We will be announcing the details of the 2023 Membership Benefit Program soon and hope to continue to build the community. If you have a business or know of a local business who’d support disc golfers let us know!

Please reach out by email ([email protected]) if you hear of course opportunities, as we may have resources to help support you, contacts, or background information we can provide. If you have an Idea for an event, email us with a brief description. We look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,
The SIDGS Board of Directors

Saanich Update:

We remain in close contact with Saanich and are currently working to renew our usership agreement at Layritz DGC. Once that is completed, we will be installing baskets and upgrading tee pads at the course. Saanich is also doing some planning for other parks and we hope to participate.

Langford Update:

We are still working towards a new disc golf course in the Westhills area with the City of Langford. The current barrier is the construction of a parking lot. Once that is complete, we will be leaning on the community to get that course built. This is really exciting and we hope to see it come to fruition soon.

Victoria Participatory Budget 2021 Results:

As many people may remember, we put in a bid for the City of Victoria Participatory Budget last year. We were proposing to host 3 pop events in city parks and were looking for funding to do so. Unfortunately, we finished last in our category and were not awarded the funds. Based on overall turnout, we mustered less than 200 votes. In the future we’ll try and work harder to promote similar initiatives, as the loss and voter turnout were disappointing.

Duck Golf Tournament:
SIDGS will be co-hosting a Duck Golf Tournament in the new year at Mary’s Farm on March 4. Closer to the Tournament, we may need a hand to prepare the course to make sure it is clearly marked and cleaned up, as it will be a sanctioned tournament. Stay tuned for further details.

SUMMER RECAP

Women’s Summer Club
This summer SIDGS was excited to sponsor the Women’s Summer Club at Mary’s Farm. Our second year of hosting a women’s night at the farm saw a slight increase in the number of players each week with an average of about 3 cards per night.. We welcomed many regular faces but also lots of new players to the community. We look forward to building on our success next year and making it even bigger!

PDGA WGE Global Event
The PDGA Women’s Global event is a biennial disc golf tournament for women and juniors with local events happening on the same weekend all over the world. 2022 saw a record number of events with over 3300 players and 129 events in 17 countries!. We were very excited to help organizers Gabby Lee, Alicia Bird and Lara Kestaloo by sponsoring a local event in August at Mary’s Farm. Over 50 players of all ages registered took part. For many this was their first tournament. SIDGS is proud to support the WGE and build disc golf in our community.
